VC Clarifies status of Law Programme

Dear Parents/Guardians,

The Catholic University of Eastern Africa (CUEA) would like to respond to recent media claims concerning the alleged closure of its Faculty of Law. The University reassures students and parents/guardians that the Faculty of Law has not, and will not, be shut down.

The Council of Legal Education (CLE) requested CUEA to carry out corrective action in the following areas; carry out a feasibility study of its law programme, review the law programme curriculum based on the feasibility study and, reduce the lecturer to student ratio to one agreed on by the Council and  CUEA.

The University, led by myself, formed a team which was tasked to take corrective action as directed by the Council of Legal Education. We dedicated considerable time and resources to each of the activities highlighted above. Below is the status of these activities:

  • Carrying out a feasibility study of the Law programme in CUEA (completed).
  • Revising the University law curriculum based on the feasibility study (completed).
  • Reducing the student-lecturer to an agreed-upon ratio between CUEA and CLE (recruitment of 12 law lecturers is at the final stages).

A progressive report on the corrective measures was submitted to CLE on 6th November, 2015   and we are confident that CUEA will receive all necessary regulatory approvals. Once again, we would like to reiterate that the CLE noted areas for improvement, requiring action by CUEA and corrective steps have already been taken, as outlined.

As a University, we are committed to working collaboratively with regulatory and professional bodies, as well as with parents/guardians and students. In this way, we ensure that our programmes and service-delivery meet internationally recognised standards of good practice, and we are assured that the University programmes will continue to thrive.

We will of course keep you informed of developments as they occur. For further information and clarification, kindly contact:
