Chancellor Condemns Garissa University Attack

His Eminence Berhaneyesus Cardinal Souraphiel has condemned the April 2 Garissa University attack where 147 students died.

Speaking during a graduation mass at CUEA whose theme was ‘I choose life’, the chancellor said that the church has always stood for the sanctity of life and echoed Pope Francis words that such acts of violence especially contributing to loss of human life should be condemned.

The Chancellor said that the Garissa University attack ‘should not have happened’. He emphasized that God is the source of life and hence no one should take it away, including governments.

Cardinal Souraphiel thanked God for all the lives from AMECEA region and beyond that have been brought together at the Catholic University saying, ‘we adore God for this’.

He further thanked parents whose students study at CUEA and especially those graduating saying that parents play a critical role as collaborators with God in giving life.

He urged graduating students to choose ‘life and not death, blessings and not curses’ as they step out in the world to pursue their respective careers. “Choose life, stand for life, it is not just an ordinary thing, each life is a gift of God” the Chancellor added.

The Chancellor also thanked the CUEA management and staff for the hard work they have put in academics and other areas noting that presence of graduating students was testament to this.

He further prayed for more vocations in the AMECEA region quoting scripture “The harvest is big but the labourers are few, we pray to the lord of the harvest to send more labourers”.

Cardinal Souraphiel lauded the recent beatification of Sr. Irene Stefani, now Blessed Irene Stefani in Nyeri, Kenya, first in Kenya and Africa at large and prayed that more of these may come mentioning possible  ‘Matyrs of Mombasa and Matyrs of Garissa’.

Cardinal Souraphiel is the Archbishop of the Metropolitan Diocese of Addis Ababa, Ethiopia and is the Chairman of Association of Member Episcopal Conferences of Eastern Africa, by virtue of which he becomes the CUEA Chancellor.

In the Mass, the Vice-Chancellor, Msgr. Dr. Pius Rutechura welcomed members of the University Council who have been holding meetings at the University, led by Bishop Muhatia Makumba the Council Chair and Bishop Alick Banda (Zambia), the Vice-Chair.
