sgsThe Catholic University of Eastern Africa’s School of Graduate Studies was established in October 2013.  It serves the Ecclesiastical Faculty of Theology, the Faculties of Arts and Social Sciences, Commerce, Science, Education and Law, the Institutes of Canon Law and Regional Integration and Development, the Centre for social Justice and Ethics, and the School of Professional Development.

The School of Graduate Studies was launched on Wednesday 21st May 2014 by His Grace, Archbishop Tarcisio Ziyaye, Chancellor of Catholic University of Eastern Africa (CUEA). In his speech, the Chancellor noted that the establishment of School of Graduate Studies will facilitate quality education in training, publishing and scholarships. He urged the students to take advantage of the School to advance the mission and vision of AMECEA.

Prof. Clement Majawa, Dean School of Graduate Studies in his address said that the Graduate School launch was a not only a historic moment in The Catholic University of Eastern Africa but it is also a unique ecclesiastical development of the Church in Africa. He acknowledged the AMECEA Bishops who have responded to the call of St. John Paul II who on 14th February 1996 made a plea to the Rectors, The Vice-Chancellors and the Academic Deans of pontifical universities in Rome saying:

“The Church and International Community expects that a Catholic University through its seat of Graduate Studies to be unique, to teach more, to research more, to witness more and to do more for its students than other ordinary universities in the noble process of transformation of Church and Society.”

Prof. Majawa highlighted the following as activities the Graduate School will undertake;

Facilitation of quality admission, registration, learning, scholarship and graduation of the postgraduate students

Ensuring excellence in postgraduate research, training and publication

Administration of exams and marks

Organization of workshops, conferences, symposia, seminars and round–table discussions

Facilitation of transformative community engagement

Development of new and relevant postgraduate programmes

Monitoring, evaluating and reviewing of current postgraduate academic programmes according to CUEA policy

Ensuring that the vision, mission and identity of CUEA is embraced by the postgraduate students throughout their study

Coordinating with other Graduate Schools in the region and beyond

Collaboration with the CUEA stakeholders

Assisting postgraduate students in fundraising for scholarly enterprise.

The Launch of the School of Graduate Studies (SGS) was graced by members of the University Council, AMECEA Secretary General Rev Dr. Ferdinand Lugonzo, CUEA’s Vice Chancellor, Msgr. Dr. Pius Rutechura, DVC Academics, Prof. Mbae, the School of Graduate Studies Governing Board, University Deans and Directors, lecturers, staff, students and distinguished invited guests.
