Community Service Week 3rd to 8th March 2014

comm serviceThe Catholic University of Eastern Africa (CUEA) marked its 30th Community Service Week from 3rd to 8th March 2014. The theme was “Education for Transformative Leadership in Africa.” The climax of the celebration was a fun filled day with activities ranging from aerobics, a community walk, youth mentorship talk and children’s fun fair. The day was also an opportunity for the entire CUEA fraternity to come together with their families and share their talents.

In his opening remarks the Vice Chancellor, Monsignor Dr. Pius Rutechura, emphasized the role of Transformative Leadership in bringing political stability and sustainable development. He called upon the CUEA community to engage in curriculum that not only embrace research but also advocate for Service Learning. The DVC Administration, Rev. Prof. Juvenalis Baitu, echoed the Vice Chancellor’s sentiments by encouraging the CUEA community to recognize the importance of contributing their experience and knowledge to the community.

Sr. Dr. Elizabeth Nduku, Director Centre for Social Justice and Ethics and the chairperson of Community Service, congratulated the CUEA community for their active participation in this year’s Community Service Week activities. She urged all members of the CUEA Community to actively take part in similar events in future.

Community Service Week Activities

All the activities carried out during the Community Service Week were aimed at giving back to the society. This year’s activities included:

Health day on 3rd March 2014. An awareness talk on the horror of rape in the society by Dr. Matthew Kipng’etich, Rev. Dr. Emmanuel Jada, Mr. Ronald Oyimbo and testimonials by rape victims.

ICT Day on 4th March 2014. A talk by Mr. James Ndwiga, on iHub and the co-working space. Students from the Computer Science Club also gave a free ICT mobile clinic in the afternoon.

Education day on 5th March 2014. There was a postgraduate seminar on the art of academic writing and an undergraduate seminar on the role of students in transformative leadership in Africa.

Spirituality day on 6th March 2014. A talk by Prof. Mary N. Gitui on holiness of the family. The Faculty of Education also took part in a tree planting exercise at the AMECEA grounds.

Outreach activity day on 7th March 2014. CUEA staff and students gave a demonstration on how to make mats for sale to women and youth at the Kenya Family Charities Kuwinda Slums. Two demonstrations firstly, how to make charcoal from cow dung, soil, ash and water, and secondly, how to plant crops using soil, manure, small rocks and a sack, were also given to youth at the District Probation Office in Kibera.

Fun day on 8th March 2014. The climax of the Community Service Week was as a walk and family fun day for CUEA staff and students. All participants received a rose and bottled water during the walk, courtesy of the Alumni office, to commemorate International Women’s Day.

The Community Service Week also attracted a number of partners including: Safaricom Limited, Britam, Kenya Commercial Bank, Equity Bank, Chase Bank and Baus Opticals among others.
