The Faculty of Education held a five day Pedagogical and Supervision of Postgraduate Students Workshop from 18th to 22nd November 2013, at the University’s Lang’ata Campus. Prof. Gary Schnellert, a Full Professor of Educational Leadership in charge of Doctoral Cohorts at the University of North Dakota, USA and Dr. Jared Keengwe, Associate Professor, Department of Teaching and Learning at University of North Dakota were the key facilitators at the workshop.

Rev. Prof. Juvenalis Baitu, DVC Administration, addressed the guests on behalf of the Vice Chancellor. He called on the participants to interact fully and challenge each other. “What we are engaged in is not for our own benefit but we do it with the view of improving the quality of people’s lives.” He added that the outcome of the workshop was a step in ensuring the realization of the University mission and vision.

According to Dr. Keengwe, supervisors help the students to be as original as possible in their work and help them to identify methodology that can be used to support their work. He emphasized that if postgraduate students think beyond just getting a PhD and work towards getting their work published, they will ensure quality in their final output. “My leadership style is servant leadership. Christ was there to serve the people. As an advisor I am there to serve the students.” Added Prof. Gary. Schnellert.

The workshop aimed to impart knowledge skills and the right attitude towards the conduct of supervisions at postgraduate level, to ensure completion of graduate courses in time, and to improve transition of research thesis and dissertations into journal articles.
