CUEA AIDS Awareness Day

aidsawarenessdayThe University’s Aids Control Unit (ACU), held a week of voluntary counseling and testing from 4th to 7th November at the University. The climax was a concert held on Thursday 7th November 2013 themed; “Getting to Zero: Zero New HIV infections. Zero Discrimination. Zero AIDS Related Deaths.”

In her opening remarks, Ms. Catherine Machyo, CUEA ACU coordinator, stated that “the purpose of this event is to alert you that we exist.

We appreciate that HIV/AIDS is here with us and we need to show support and work together towards getting to the zero target.”

“When you don’t discriminate and see each other in God’s image and likeness you are transforming the world.” Said Mr. Gideon Maina, Dean of Students. He called on the students to be cautious in life and openly discuss about HIV and AIDS.

The guest speaker, Dr. Allan Airo, Resident and Physiologist at Nairobi West Hospital, observed that the current prevalence rate of HIV in Kenya is at seven percent. “This means that if we are about 65milion Kenyans about 5milion Kenyans are living with H.I.V. Once you get HIV it lives with you for a lifetime, a lifetime of daily medications.”  Said Dr. Airo.

Dr. Airo echoed that it’s not easy but we can get to Zero. Addressing the students he emphasized that “you are responsible for your life, and no one can take responsibility for your life.”
